Introducing Mom's Flan Recipe, a delicious and creamy dessert that's perfect for any occasion. This classic Mexican dessert has been enjoyed by generations of families and is known for its smooth texture and rich flavor. With a unique twist on the classic recipe, this flan is sure to become a new favorite in your household.
In a heavy saucepan, cook and stir sugar over medium-low heat until melted and golden, about 15 minutes.
¾ cup sugar
Quickly pour into an ungreased 2-qt. round baking or souffle dish, tilting to coat the bottom; let stand for 10 minutes.
In a bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
8 oz cream cheese
Beat in eggs, one at a time, until thoroughly combined.
5 large eggs
Add remaining ingredients; mix well.
1 can sweetened condensed milk, 1 can evaporated milk, 1 tsp vanilla extract
Pour over caramelized sugar.
Place the dish in a larger baking pan.
Pour boiling water into larger pan to a depth of 1 in. Bake at 350° for 50-60 minutes or until center is just set (mixture will jiggle).
Remove dish from a larger pan to a wire rack; cool for 1 hour.
Refrigerate overnight.
To unmold, run a knife around edges and invert onto a large rimmed serving platter.
Cut into wedges or spoon onto dessert plates; spoon sauce over each serving.
Notes
Be patient when caramelizing the sugar. It takes time and attention to get the sugar to the perfect golden color, but the end result is worth it.
Use room temperature cream cheese and eggs to make sure the mixture is smooth and well combined.
Be careful when pouring the boiling water into the larger pan. You don't want to get any water in the flan mixture.
Let the flan cool completely before refrigerating it overnight. This will allow the flavors to meld together and give the flan its signature smooth texture.
You can experiment with different flavors of extract, such as almond or coconut, to give the flan a unique twist.
