Sazón is an integral part of Puerto Rican cuisine, lending its unique flavor profile to many traditional dishes. This seasoning mix combines a medley of spices to create a powerful blend that can transform simple dishes into flavorful feasts. While commercially prepared sazón packets are widely available, making it at home ensures that you're getting a pure, preservative-free blend that is true to its origins.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the ground annatto, cumin, coriander, granulated garlic, granulated onion, dried oregano, turmeric, black pepper, and salt (if using).
2 tablespoons ground annatto, 2 tablespoons ground cumin, 2 tablespoons ground coriander, 1 tablespoon granulated garlic, 1 tablespoon granulated onion, 2 teaspoons dried oregano, 1 teaspoon ground turmeric, ½ teaspoon ground black pepper, ½ teaspoon salt
Mix well until all the spices are thoroughly combined.
Transfer the sazón mixture into an airtight container.
Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.
Notes
The color of the sazón primarily comes from the annatto seeds, which impart a red-orange hue to dishes.
Sazón can be used as a seasoning for meats, poultry, seafood, rice, beans, stews, and more.
Typically, 1-2 teaspoons are enough to season most dishes, but you can adjust to your taste.
If you want your sazón to have a bit of a kick, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or adjust the black pepper to your preference.
