The Cubano is a traditional Cuban recipe that will have your taste buds doing the happy dance. The Authentic Cuban Sandwich is made with marinated roast pork, sliced ham, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard, and pickles then toasted in a press until golden brown and crispy perfection has been achieved.
Obviously, the Cubano is popular across the island of Cuba but it is world-famous. I have eaten a Cubano in Miami, New York City, and even in Phoenix AZ. Although it has as many variations as it has chefs that make the Cubano, the one constant is the grilled ham and cheese on a pressed sandwich.
If you do not have a panini-griddle you can still press your sandwich on a regular griddle underneath a cast iron skillet (or similarly heavy pan), or in a George Foreman Grill, as well.
This is a perfect sandwich for a lunchtime meal. Usually served with a side of chips and a crisp dill pickle.
- 1 loaf Cuban bread
- 4 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp yellow mustad
- 1 lbs roast pork
- 1 lbs sliced ham
- 4 oz Swiss cheese
- 4 oz sliced dill pickles
- Slice the bread in half lengthwise. Butter the bottom half with 2 tablespoon softened butter. Spread the mustard on the top half.1 loaf Cuban bread, 4 tbsp butter, 2 tbsp yellow mustad
- Layer the sandwich with roast pork, sliced ham, Swiss cheese and dill pickles. Top the Cubano with the top bread slice.1 lbs roast pork, 1 lbs sliced ham, 4 oz Swiss cheese, 4 oz sliced dill pickles
- Slather the remaining butter over both sides of the sandwich.
- Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat for 5-6 minutes per side, pressing it down very firmly with another pan or spatula to "press" it tightly, until warmed through and bread is nice and crispy.
- Remove, slice and serve.
Grilling Note: You can also use a panini press to make this sandwich.
