Fajitas de Carne are Beef Fajitas made with sliced skirt steak, bell peppers, onions, and a mix of spices. Everything is grilled on a hot skillet and served on a warm tortilla and topped with guacamole and salsa.

Popular alternatives to skirt steak include flank steak, sirloin steak, hanger steak, chicken, shrimp, and occasionally even pork. Originally the dish was made of just grilled steak on a warm tortilla but as time goes by vegetables like bell peppers, onions and jalapenos have been included.

This Tex-Mex recipe first appeared in September 1969 at a concession stand at a rural Diez y Seis celebration in Kyle, Texas. During that same year, Otilia Garza introduced fajitas at the Round-Up Restaurant in Pharr, Texas. Garza is credited with adding the signature sizzling plate presentation of fajitas.

How to Make This Fajitas de Carne Recipe

After you marinate the steak and vegetables you will saute the vegetables first in a skillet then the meat. When the meat is thoroughly cooked add the vegetables back in and serve on a warm tortilla.

Ingredients

  • 3Ā tbspĀ olive oil
  • 1Ā tbspĀ lime juice
  • Ā½Ā tspĀ chili powder
  • 1Ā tspĀ ground cumin
  • Ā¼Ā tspĀ cayenne pepper
  • Ā½Ā tspĀ salt
  • Ā½Ā tspĀ black pepper
  • 2Ā clovesĀ garlicĀ minced
  • 2Ā lbsĀ skirt steakĀ sliced into Ā½-inch strips
  • ā…”Ā red pepperĀ deseeded and sliced into thin strips
  • ā…”Ā green pepperĀ deseeded and sliced into thin strips
  • ā…”Ā yellow pepperĀ deseeded and sliced into thin strips
  • 1Ā red onionĀ peeled and sliced into thin strips
  • 6Ā tortillasĀ warmed

How to Cook Beef Fajitas

Time needed:Ā 12 hours and 30 minutes

Fajitas de Carne Cooking Directions

  1. Mix the Marinade

    Add the olive oil, lime juice, chili powder, ground cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and garlic to a jar with a screw top or tight fitting lid. Shake until well combined.

  2. Slice the Beef

    Slice the beef, peppers, and onion into strips.

  3. Bag the Meat and Vegetables

    Place the steak into a sealable bag. Place the peppers and onion into a separate sealable bag.

  4. Marinade the Meat and Vegetables

    Pour ā…“ of the marinade over steak, ā…“ of marinade over vegetables and reserve the remaining marinade in the jar for using when cooking the steak fajitas. Seal the bags tightly and refrigerate for one hour to overnight.

  5. Cook the Meat and Vegetables

    Add steak strips to the same skillet. When the steak is cooked throughout (about 7-10 minutes), add vegetables back to the skillet along with the reserved marinade.

  6. Serve the Fajitas

    Serve with warm tortillas and desired optional garnishes.

These delicious beef fajitas are juicy, tender, flavorful, and even better than anything you will find in a restaurant.

  • When ready to cook, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Pour the vegetables into the skillet and cook until just tender crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove the vegetables from the skillet to a plate and set aside for later use.
  • Add steak strips to the same skillet. When the steak is cooked throughout (about 7-10 minutes), add vegetables back to the skillet along with the reserved marinade.
  • Serve with warm tortillas and desired optional garnishes.
